About the city, College

With 1296 beds, Sassoon General Hospitals is a major public hospital in Pune, India. It is associated with a nursing school and the B. J. Medical College. The second-most populous district in the State of Maharashtra, the Pune District, has 9,426,959 residents, who are served by Sassoon Hospital. In 1867, an important gift from Mumbai-based Jewish philanthropist David Sassoon made it possible to build the hospital. 144 patients might have been hosted at the hospital initially.

On June 23, 1946, B. J. Medical College was established to take the role of the previous B. J. Medical College, together with the head of the Bombay government, B. G. Kher, dedicated the foundation. This was the realization of an able Parsi donor Byramjee Jeejeebhoy's dream to establish a medical school with facilities similar to those in Bombay in Poona. He was so kind and generous that he allowed the B.J. On land he gave, the Medical School began operating in 1871, and when the school was raised to a college in 1946, the name was unexpectedly kept. In 1949, the University of Poona (Pune) became associated with the MBBS program in medicine.

Pune had already benefited from the kind donations of the Sassoon family, a Jewish merchant family, in the form of the David Sassoon Hospital (Old Sassoon Building), built in 1867 for the benefit of the poor and needy at a cost of Rs. 213,000, and the Jacob Sassoon Hospital, built by his nephew in 1905–06 to ease the pressure on the David Sassoon Hospital. Both structures were stunning works of architecture, and the David Sassoon Hospital clock tower served as a city landmark. Avtar Meher Baba was born on the campus in the former maternity ward of the hospital, and Mahatma Gandhi went through an emergency operation in 1924 under the care of a British surgeon named Col. Murdoch with the assistance of an Indian anesthesiologist named Dr. Datey.

The B. J. Medical College (BJMC) and the Sassoon Hospital (New Sassoon Building) rose on this holy land, facing each other and sharing the distinctive architectural feature of having two white pillars with elephant heads on top. Dr. Radha Krishnan opened the BJMC's main structure in 1952.

Dr. B. B. Dikshit, an internationally recognized academician who served as the college's first principal when it first opened with 50 students, along with Dr. Bhende and Balwani's quiet leadership and strict discipline, left a lasting impression on the young minds of countless students during the early years of their lives. These students then absorbed these wonderful characteristics and used them to contribute their best self to society. For several years, 143 postgraduate students and 200 MBBS students are enrolled each year. Currently, there are 1700 students and more than 2000 staff members, including 268 faculty, on campus at any given moment. Presently, courses of MBBS, MD, MS, PhD, Diplomas, MCh (CVTS), MSc, GNM, BSc Nursing, DMLT, PGDMCH, and PGDGM are offered here.

Strong principles were created, attitudes were shaped, friendships were created, minds were molded, and personalities were groomed along the way to give rise to legendary "personalities" who created a place for themselves in the world. While many have achieved amazing levels of success and excellence in their chosen fields, gaining awards on a global scale, others have made lasting contributions to theater and film. BJMC even has a position in politics alongside smart administrators and doctor politicians. Dr. Ajay S. Chandanwale, the current dean, has sustained and improved upon the strong foundation that Dr. Dikshit and his successor Dr. B. M. Desai developed a rich heritage of excellent teaching, outstanding research, and devoted service. Their university has achieved preeminence, ranking among the top ten medical colleges in India, as a result of their efforts to maintain the good old principles while introducing the new.

The passion, devotion, and constant appreciation of teaching that so many teachers show has influenced succeeding generations of students who try to imitate them.While some have chosen to pursue academic careers, the second generation of teachers is transferring the legacy to the current class of students, while others provide heroic services to society by reducing patient suffering. The group has received several social activists from BJMC. People who have achieved success in their professional organizations have brought honor to our institution and made a reputation for themselves. The subsequent generations of "BJites" are very much like their parents. In addition to Dr. Dikshit's innovative study on the function of acetylcholine in sleep and Dr. Bhende's discovery of the Bombay blood group, Sassoon Hospital was given recognition for the condition that was discovered and named after it by Drs. Ganla and M. J. Narsimhan, earning it a place in the Jablonski's Dictionary of Syndromes.

The staff society was established in 1968, following Sassoon Hospital's anniversary celebrations, thanks to the efforts of academics with a passion for research like Dr. Deodhar, Dr. Mutalik, and others to create an atmosphere for the presentation and discussion of research findings at Staff conferences.To promote interdepartmental research and give young researchers a platform to present their work and publish it in the Research Society Journal "Medical Journal of Western India," the staff society was combined with the newly established Research Society. Both are up and running and have given young staff members and students an opportunity to pursue a career in research. In the following two decades, departments and spheres of work were expanded. A number of specialty clinics were launched. The division of departments occurred in the third decade. Affiliated disciplines have been raised to the status of departments.

The previous twenty years have seen the wings spread. Through funding organizations like the ICMR and DST, collaborative research has greatly increased. The Maharashtra government launched the Tribal Research Program. A leading training and research facility, the Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health, was founded in 1991. Through national organizations like the ICMR and international organizations like WHO and UNICEF, outreach services in the fields of mental health, preventive medicine, human reproduction research, and tribal research were launched. With the start of these large-scale research programs, the Institutional Ethics Committee was established. The Pharmacology Department began producing the quarterly Drug Bulletins "Drugs News and Views" in 1993 and has been providing CMES for physicians in general, expanding its services outside the walls of the institution. The Microbiology Department began providing communicable disease surveillance services.

The institution celebrated its historic Golden Jubilee in 1996, renovation work on the college library began. The Central Library was upgraded into a cutting-edge "Library Services Department" in a matter of years. A variety of new diagnostic and treatment facilities, including the CT scan, Nuclear Medicine Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery Unit, and the Leptospirosis Diagnostic Lab, have been established in following years of the Golden Jubilee. The BJMC entered a new era of cooperative worldwide research in 1998. Dr. Robert C. Bollinger of Johns Hopkins University (JHU), USA, collaborated with Dr. M. A. Phadke, who was the Dean at the time. The collaborative grant proposal was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA. After receiving his training at JHU, Dr. Ramesh A. Bhosale began working with Dr. K. E. Bharucha, who was the department's head of women's health at the time. With the help of this grant, the Six Week Extended Nevirapine (SWEN) study was carried out from 2002 to 2007 in an effort to stop HIV transmission from mother to child. This important study, which was published in Lancet in 2008, had a significant impact and changed WHO recommendations for preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission among nursing populations in resource-constrained locations. This allowed BJMC to conduct research of an international level.

Following this effective display of research capacity, NIH USA gave BJMC and JHU a Clinical Trial Unit for the years 2008 to 2014. The application submitted by BJMC-JHU in response to the NIH's RFA came in at number one among all international submissions. The BJMC CTU, led by Dr. Ajay S. Chandanwale as Principal Investigator, is now effectively implementing numerous study protocols of the ACTG and IMPAACT research networks. Various other projects are completed by BJMC such as Vanderbilt University USA-NARI-BJMC collaborative project on Cancer Cervix Screening in HIV under Dr. Ramesh A. Bhosale Professor and Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, WHO Cardiovascular Disease surveillance project, International Clinical Epidemiology Network project for MDR TB surveillance, IDSP Training & pilot center, NACO Training Center for: MOs, Technicians & Counselors, etc.

Through the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), a free HIV treatment center (ART) program was launched in 2005. Currently, the ART clinic has more than 24000 HIV-positive patients registered, of whom roughly 12000 are receiving free ART. This center, which is run by Nodal Officer Prof. Dr. D. B. Kadam, is the second-best in India. 4000 tuberculosis patients or suspects are seen annually at BJMC, a government-recognized TB treatment facility. The Diamond Jubilee of BJMC was honored in 2006 by alumni and BJMC, which sparked the creation of the alumni organization. An 11-story, 26000 sq m new building with a special grant provided by the Maharashtra government is now being built for BJMC.

In Maharashtra, BJMC fought the 2009 H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak. The BJMC provided higher-level care for swine flu patients in Pune, the geographic center of the pandemic, under the capable direction of Dr. D. B. Kadam, Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine. A revolutionary "Pune management protocol" for swine flu was created by Dr. D. B. Kadam and his colleagues, and it was adopted across the country.The casualties of the German Bakery bomb incident were quickly treated in February 2010 by BJMC and Sassoon General Hospital. Following that, BJMC created a thorough plan for disaster management for the city of Pune.

The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS- a State Medical University) has received two vice chancellors from BJMC, namely Dr. M. A. Phadke and Dr. Arun V. Jamkar. They have both held the position of dean at BJMC. MUHS's current vice chancellor is Dr. Arun Jamkar. In May 2011, Dr. Ajay S. Chandanwale took the position of Dean. With many studies finished and others under progress, the Clinical Trial Unit that the NIH USA provided to BJMC in partnership with JHU during the 2008–2014 period effectively concluded its stay. In addition, NIH USA extended the Clinical Trial Unit's funding to BJMC and JHU for the period of 2014 through 2020.

In Padmashri Karmaveer Dr. Bhaurao Patil Memorial Hall on January 14, 2012, a presentation on "Indo-US Research Collaboration of BJMC" was made to Honorable US Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Department of Health and Human Services, Government of the United States of America. The wonderful donation of about 1.5 crores from the "Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Trust, Pune" transformed the Sassoon Hospital's kitchen into a cutting-edge one with automatic machines and a civic makeover. Additionally, this trust has committed to annually offering all patients under their care free, high-quality meals. Shri. Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra, officially opened this facility. With a total cost of Rs. 2.35 crores, construction of a new water tank for SGH with a 12 lakh Litre capacity was completed. Complete medical care for athletes participating in the 30th Asian Athletics Games at Balewadi Stadium in Pune from July 1–7, 2013, was given by the SGH team in cooperation with other hospitals.

The introduction of the Human Milk Bank in SGH cost Rs. 15 lakhs thanks to a donation from the Bank of Baroda, and Supriya Sule, an honorary member of parliament, officially opened it on November 19th, 2013. The Dean's office has undergone a comprehensive makeover to become a cutting-edge structure. The hospital wards and the administrative section of the college are undergoing renovations. Due to a donation from the Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Trust, the third floor's wards are currently undergoing renovation. Through the National Informatic Center, internet connectivity has been made available throughout the whole hospital and college.

The government has received a "Vision 2025" proposal that includes a proposed cancer hospital, dental college, physiotherapy college, and super specialties, among other things.

B.J Medical College Admission

Every year, 200 students are admitted to the college's MBBS program. With respect to constitutional reservations, admissions are based on the All India NEET score through a centralized process run by the Maharashtra government. The distribution of seats is 15% by the DGHS GOI, 30% for State Level, and 70% for the Development Board Area (Rest of Maharashtra) of the remaining seats.
