The college is formerly known with the name of IIT madras. The college was opened in 1959. It is known as an institute of eminent values. The college has research facilities that are known as research parks for providing research facilities to students. For the fourth consecutive year, IIT Madras has maintained its top ranking according to the NIRF Rankings in 2023. There are various courses provided in graduate and postgraduate programs of the college in fields such as engineering, humanities, science, management and others as well. More than 100 full-time, part-time, and online courses in engineering, science, humanities, and management are available at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels through IIT Madras' 16 departments, 4 national research centers, and 10 institution research centers. The nation's first online BSc program in data science programming was just introduced by the institute. The West German government provided technical support in 1956 to help construct an engineering higher education institution in India. The first Indo-German agreement was struck in 1959 for the founding of the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras in Bonn, West Germany. At the time, IIT Madras was the largest international educational initiative sponsored by the West German government. When 120 students were admitted to the inaugural year of the engineering program in July 1959, the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras officially opened for business.The then-Union Minister for Scientific In 1959, the Institute was formally opened by Research and Cultural Affairs. There were 120 students in the inaugural class altogether, representing India. The IITs were designated as Institutes of National Importance in 1961. On July 11, 1964, the first convocation ceremony took place. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, who was the President of India at the time, gave the convocation speech and awarded degrees to the first group of graduates. The 1966 BTech class was the first to include female students at the institute. 2009 was the Golden Jubilee of IIT Madras, while 2019 marked the Diamond Jubilee.
