Lady hardinge medical college is one of the most prestigious medical colleges in India. The university was established in the year 1916 and later became part of the Faculty of medical sciences. The university was first established in conscience to the University of Delhi in 1950.
When the National capital of India was shifted to Delhi, Lady Hardinge, the wife of the Viceroy of India back then, Baron Charles Hardinge, decided to establish a medical college for women in Delhi. She recognised the need for medical colleges in India for womens. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Hardinge on 17 March 1914 and the college was named Queen Mary College & Hospital to commemorate the visit by Queen Mary.
Lady Hardinge was proactive about the education of females in India, collecting funds for the college from the princely states and the public until her death and built lusturing infrastructure for the education of women in India. The college was originally inaugurated on 7 February 1916, in the Delhi Enclave area. The college and the hospital was named after Lady Hardinge, as then suggested by Queen Mary. The first batch of the female Indian students included 16 students, under the principal Kate Platt. The college became affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1950 and post-graduate courses were implemented in 1954.
