The college was opened in 1994. The college has various courses in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The college is considered as a top choice for management university. The students can gain experience about different things such as civil engineering, computer science, electronics, mechanical, information technology, electrical, electronics and communication, instrumentation technology, biotechnology engineering, chemical engineering and many more fields. Students can choose courses like B.E. / B.Tech, MCA, MBA/PGDM, M.E. /M.Tech, BBA with streams of Engineering, IT & Software, and Business & Management Studies, Manufacturing engineering, power engineering, and artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The institute's courses are duly acknowledged by accrediting bodies such as the AICTE. There are various courses available at the SJCE a student can choose from to study. The SJCE has various facilities that include an auditorium, a gym, a hospital, a library, hostels, a cafeteria, sports complex, labs, a shuttle service, labs and other services. The college has facilities for volleyball, table tennis, hall, banks, athletics track, hockey, library, conference room and beauty room provided to the students.
The college has a rich history of serving for more than 29 years. They offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs to the students. The college has always remained under top 10 colleges since its construction. Students have achieved 1541 ranks thus far, with 57 Gold and 55 Silver medals among them. Three times (in 2010, 2019, and 2021) among the 500 affiliated institutions of Anna University in TamilNadu, the college has held the top spot for the largest number of Anna University ranks. Since 2017, the College has maintained a consistent ranking in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
According to the national Atal Ranking of Institutional Innovations and Achievement (ARIIA – 2021) their institution is ranked in the "Elite Band." A+ accreditation obtained with a 3.46 rating on a National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rating of 4.00. Since 2020, their organization has enjoyed "Autonomous Status" within Anna University. Nine undergraduate courses have been periodically accredited since 2003. 174 research scholars are now pursuing their Ph.D. or MS through research in seven of our departments that Anna University has recognized as "Research Centers." Ph.D. degrees have been granted to 149 scientists from these research centers. It has been designated as a "Scientific and Industrial Research Organization" (SIRO) by the Government of India's DSIR since 2014. The college has a high amount of research publications, as evidenced by its 50 Web of Science index and 55 Scopus h-Index.
For the previous eight years, the Business English program has been ranked as the "Best Exam Preparatory Center" in India and among the top 25 prep centers in South Asia. Staff members have worked on 45 sponsored research projects of Rs. 2.83 crores and 40 faculty training programs worth Rs. 54 lakhs, which have been funded by various organizations such as Anna University, NRB, DST, SERB, DBT, NRDMS, and AICTE. Obtained a Rs. 71 Lakh FIST award from the Indian government's Department of Science and Technology. Their students received 19 INAE Innovative Student Project Awards for their creative senior year projects. Anticipated outcomes include the selection of two projects for final presentations in 2022. Selected as part of the national "Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Programme" of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), and the SC/ST Skill and Personality Development Program Center (SPDP) of the AICTE, New Delhi. Presented with the First AICTE-ECI ChatraVishwakarma Award for Best Institute at the National Level in 2017. Won first place in the All India Council for Technical Education's (AICTE) 2020 "UtkrishtSansthan Vishwakarma Award" in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD).

In response to the widespread perception of a need for elite management specialists in the business sector, St. Joseph's College of Engineering established the Department of Management Studies in 1995. The department was established with the goal of providing the next generation of Indian leaders with top-notch management education. Producing moral leaders with strong integrative leadership skills, critical thinking talents, and the ability to support their teams' success is the main objective of the MBA program.
The MBA program admits 120 students annually and is an independent program. The NBA has accredited the four-semester MBA program, which is offered over two academic years. Any two of the following electives—marketing, finance, human resources, operations, systems, and business analytics—can be double specialized in by the department.

• Non-Formal English Club : At St. Joseph's College of Engineering, this club is for students who require assistance and direction in order to become fluent in English. Second- and third-year students oversee a hostel that first-year students stay in.
• Eco Club : The primary goal of the environmental club, Eco-Soc, is to raise public understanding of the interconnection of the political, social, economic, and ecological spheres. In particular, it supports the equitable distribution, economic efficiency, and ecological sustainability of the use of water resources.
• Google Developers Student Club : The Google Developers Student Club is an endeavor by Google in collaboration with 172 schools and universities to support innovation and enhance students' technical and business acumen.
• Math Club : The goal of this club is to help kids think more creatively. Members of the club are also encouraged to think rationally and mathematically.
• Quiz group : The goal of this group is to test students' competitive spirits by getting them involved in quiz programs.
• CTS Student Club : The CTS Student Club initiative, sponsored by Cognizant, seeks to prepare students for the IT sector by fostering innovation and bridging the gap between students and the field.
