About University of Madras, Chennai

When the Governor in Council was considering "some effective and liberal measures for the establishment of an improved system of national education," 70,000 native inhabitants publicly demanded higher education in the history of the Madras Presidency. The demand was signed and delivered to The Right Honourable Lord John Elphinstone G.C.H., Governor of Madras. The necessity for an English college at Madras was pressed in this public plea, which was delivered on November 11, 1839, by Mr. George Norton, the Advocate General at the time. That being said, Lord Elphinstone proceeded to develop a plan for the creation of a Central Collegiate Institution, or 'University'. It is said that the college was built by the ideas of Lord Elphinstone. There are two departments that there are in the college. The primary consists of teachings that focus on English, Philosophy, Regional Languages and Science. The secondary consists of teachings that focus on Philosophy, Literature and Science.

In January 1840, the University Board was established, with Mr. George Norton serving as its president. This served as the model for the current Presidency College in Chennai. But it took 14 years for the famous Sir Charles Wood's Education Dispatch of 1854 to develop an organized educational program for India. In it, the need for "creating a properly articulated system of education from the primary school to the University" was explained. The Dispatch suggested that professorships be established at universities "for the purpose of the delivery of lectures in various branches of learning including classical and vernacular languages." The college was considered as a top university according to the Legislative Council of India Act that came into existence in September, 1857.

The majority of universities, including Mysore University (1916), Osmania University (1918), Andhra University (1926), Annamalai University (1929), Travancore University (1937), currently known as Kerala University, Sri Venkateswara University (1954), Madurai Kamaraj University (1966), Bharathidasan University (1982), and Bharathiar University (1982), were born out of and supported by the University of Madras as it developed and grew throughout the nineteenth century to encompass the entirety of South India. the TamilNadu Dr. M.G.R.
